Claude Can Now Learn Your Workflow By Watching You

On July 21, Anthropic added a feature to Claude called Record a Skill. You open the Claude desktop app, click the plus button in Cowork, hit record, and do the task on your screen while you talk through it out loud.

Claude watches the whole thing and turns it into a skill it can run again on its own.

That's the entire feature. It's a bigger deal than it sounds like.

Here's why. Up to now, teaching an AI tool to handle something specific to your business meant writing instructions. Detailed ones. You had to describe every step, spell out the exceptions, and hope you didn't leave out the one detail that actually matters. Leave something out and the tool does the job wrong, confidently, every single time you ask it again.

Most business owners never get past that first hurdle. Not because the idea is bad, but because writing a good instruction set for a recurring task is its own project, and it competes with the work you're already behind on. Anthropic calls these instruction packs skills, and until now, building one meant writing a structured file yourself. Useful if you're technical. A wall if you're not.

Record a Skill flips the order. Instead of describing the task, you show it. Reconcile this week's invoices while narrating which ones you flag and why. Rename a folder of product photos the way you always rename them. Build the Friday sales report the way you've built it forty times before. Claude watches, listens to your reasoning, and saves the whole thing as a skill it can replay whenever you need it.

Think about what that removes. It's not the AI getting smarter in some abstract sense. It's Anthropic deleting the step where you had to become a decent technical writer before the AI could help you with something routine.

Here's where I want to slow down, because there's a catch worth naming honestly.

A demonstration only teaches Claude what you actually did. Not what you meant to do, and not what the ideal version of the process looks like. If your invoice reconciliation has a workaround you've never quite fixed, that workaround gets taught right along with everything else. The skill will be a faithful copy of your process, flaws included. Claude isn't going to notice that step six only exists because your old accounting software had a bug in 2023.

That's not a reason to skip this. It's a reason to be deliberate about which task you record first.

Pick something you already do the same way every time, with a clear start and finish. Something you've cleaned up in your head even if you've never written it down. A weekly report. A client onboarding checklist. The way you tag and file expenses before they hit the books. Do it once this week with the recording on, narrate your reasoning like you're training a new hire on their first day, and see what comes back the second time you ask for it.

Then judge the output the way you'd judge a new hire's work after showing them something once. Did it get the parts right that matter, or just the parts that were easy to copy?

That distinction is the real story here, more than the feature itself. Claude Cowork has been adding pieces like this for months, each one narrowing the gap between typing instructions at a machine and just doing the work in front of it. Record a Skill is Anthropic betting that showing beats telling, and for a lot of owners who never got around to writing a real standard operating procedure for anything, that bet is probably right.

But showing only works if what you're showing is worth repeating. Before you hand a habit off to something that will run it exactly the same way a thousand times, it's worth asking whether it's a habit you'd actually want a new employee to inherit too.
